CHAPTER 1
The First Kill
The town of Lincoln Square Chicago, Illinois was a fairly safe neighborhood. I mean there was a missing necklace or a few stolen donuts at Alberto's Italian bakery but other than that it was almost perfect. In fact, the town was even nicknamed "Heaven city"! But that all changed one day.
"Honey!" said Mrs. Johnson the mother of Sage and James happily married to Mr.Johnson. "Yes'm?" Replied Mr. Johnson. Mrs. Johnson dropped the local newspaper on the dining table. Mr. Johnson stared at the newspaper wide-eyed. "What's wrong?" James asked confused. Sage flips her newly done box braids saying bluntly, "Stay out of grown folk's business". "Shut up!" James says annoyed. "James don't be rude to your little sister." Mrs. Johnson says. "He's not that much older than me!" Sage says whining.
"Got to bed children you need rest for school." Mrs.Johnson said with a long sigh. James and Sage pretend to go upstairs but really crouch down on the steps out of sight. "5 children?!" "What sick person would kill 5 CHILDREN?!" Mr.Johnson said angrily. They were about the kids age too. And no one would even bat an eye if a few black children were found dead. And they were missing for weeks WEEKS before found!" Mr.Johnson said in disappointment.
Sage and James carefully snuck up into their rooms restless to see if they were next. However, there were eager to learn the full story and why the town kept it under wraps in the first place. But James was especially worried he grew up in this town boring but at least safe and hope for a little thrill a little danger. But he never wanted this.

But of course, time stops for no man and every kid still had to go to school. When they woke up James was really eager to talk to his friends Andrew and Olivia about what he heard last night. Although he couldn't show how he felt because his parents would be curious and he technically was supposed to be in bed when his parents were talking about how those 5 kids went missing. But Sage was just sitting there thinking about how she could have been one of those kids.
When James and Sage got to school they went there separate ways to talk to their friends. When James got to his friends he was so excited to talk to them that he completely ignored what they were talking about. "Hey, we were talking!" Olivia yells at James. "Oh, sorry I didn't realize." James says apologetically. "It's alright, I guess." Andrew says restlessly. "What were you guys talking about?" James asked curiously. "Well since you wanna know, Andrew was telling me about how he was friends with one of the kids that went missing. "Olivia says nonchalantly "WHAT!?" "You're just gonna say that so casually." James said surprised on how calm Olivia was talking about what happened. "I mean yeah, we talked about it a lot before you came here." Olivia answers directly. "Yall talked about all this without-" *Bell rings.* "me..." James says defeated. "Well guess we gotta go to class now." Andrew says sorrowfully.

*Before the bell rang Sage also talked to her friends.* "Yall here what happened yesterday?" Sage asks her friends. "No, what happened?" Rebecca (Sage's friend) asks curiously. "Some kids went missing and they were proclaimed dead." "I don't really think they are actually dead though, it just seems really sketchy to me how someone could kill all those kids and get away with it." Sage says seriously. "Yeah what you're saying does seem kinda sketchy" Jabari (Sage's friend) says concerned. "But what can we do now isn't not like there alive somewhere in hiding right?" Rebecca said jokingly trying to bring a little joy in a melancholy situation.
The Bell rang and Jabari and Sage departed from Rebecca and headed to class. All day however Sage kept thinking about Rebecca's comment. I mean she didn't think those kids were alive but she did think there was more to the story than what the police said. But she knew trying to investigate was crazy so she just left her thoughts as thoughts and tried to ignore it. James on the other hand was still scared he could have easily been one of those kids. But it wasn't just him the whole town, no, the whole state seemed to be shook! And they didn't know if the guys was dead, or arrested, or even what he looked like.

For the rest of the school day the killing was the talk of school. When Sage and James got home their parents had a stressed look on their face. "Sit down children" Mr. Johnson said pulling out a chair for Sage and James. They sat down and so did their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson both looked at each other and took a deep breath. "Look you guys know there are some sick people in this world right? And they will do bad things to people because they c-" Mrs. Johnson started before Mr. Johnson impatiently interrupted "5 children wandered off from a field tripped and were murdered. Now, this was quite recently and as of today we have implemented some rules to keep you guys safe." Sage and James looked at each other and pretend to be shocked. I mean they knew most of what their dad had said but the field trip part was new information.
Their parents went on saying stuff like they weren't allowed to go over to people's houses unless they were family, we had to come straight home after school no detours and no after-school activities, etc... James and Sage were disappointed now they couldn't do anything!
But there was no point in trying to negotiate after all their parents were stubborn once they did something it was final. Instead, they headed upstairs did their homework, and got ready for school the next day. And for once going to school didn't seem so bad considering that was their only shot at some sort of social life. Since their parents wouldn't let them socialize or talk to anyone.

But Sage was still weirdly quiet because she was thinking about what Rebecca said the majority of the class time. "Hey, what are you thinking about?" Rebecca asks curiously. "Oh, nothing." Sage replied hoping Rebecca doesn't ask any more questions. "Seems like to me you're thinking of a lot more than "nothing". Rebecca replies trying to convince Sage to tell her. "Fine, I've just been thinking about what you said earlier today about the missing kids. "Really Sage, you know I said that as a joke. Rebecca replies laughing. "Yea, but I just been thinking about it, like why would the police wait so long to publish it" Sage says hoping Rebecca doesn't make fun of her. "Maybe because they were trying to investigate it further before releasing false news but they found nothing so they just told everyone else" Rebecca replies shrugging. "Yea, but still it seems a little sketchy to me."
Sage says as the bell rings. "Okay, well talk to Jabari about it, you know he likes to make conspiracy theories." Rebecca says still not taking Sage seriously. "Okay." Sage replies sadly. "Hey, what up Sage, and Rebecca." Jabari says cheerfully. "Nothing much I was just talking to Sage." Rebecca replies excitedly." "Why do you look so down Sage?" Jabari replies sympathetically. "No reason." Sage replies knowing Jabari will probably make fun of her too. "Oh, uh okay let's get to class" Jarbari replies confused. "Yea, the vibe is kinda off right now." Rebecca replies trying to enlighten the mood.
