Erasmus+ what a winderful world - our school vegetable garden

In our greenhouse we planted haromatic herbs seeds suc as parsley, celery, basil, thyme in little vases. Here, in a warmer climate, the seed could germinate forming little plants that later on we moved to the garden. We also planted strawberries. We kept them indoor during the colder winter months and we took them out in the garden as soon as the climate was suitable.

Insects are very important for a vegetable garden because the impollinate flowers creating fruits. This was how strawberries, peas and fava beans were born. We alson know that insects like colourful flowers so, in order to attract them, we decide to plant them around the vegetable areas. Students from alla ages brought little plants to school and planted them. This was done in the week between March 11 and March 22 as part of the initiative called "nontiscordardime" organised by Legambiente.

We then started our soil preparation. The area was covered by weed so we had to clean it up by using scissors and a mower. We then started turning the soil. This was very important to make the soil softer and let the roots of our plants spread through it. For this job we used a hoe and a spade. We added some humus and organic fertilizer, mixed the soil around, watered it and let it rest.

We started our School Garden Activity in January 2022. Our aim was to create an are where we could grow local products seeing them through the different stages of their life. To start with we had to select an area in our school's external spaces suitable for our scope. We selected an area easily accessible from the entrance hall and fairly visible from most of our classes.

Starting from January 2022 our students (from classes 2A, 2B, 2D, 2F and 3B) worked on the creation of a school garden where they grew winter products. In this e-book below you will find a photo gallery and a description of the various stages of this experience. Each student or group of students then selected a product to be used in a vegetarian recipe: either a traditional one or a personal reinterpretation of it. About ten days later we mixed the soil around again and we noticed some earthworms wandering around. We were very happy because this indicated our soil was in very good health. Earthworms are vital littel creatures break down and recycle leaves, fungi, bacteria, basically any organic waste present in the soil, and by doing so they provide natural fertilizers. Worms also dig tunnels in the soil making it softer and helping nutrients to spread.

It was very omportant to prevent visitors from accidentally stepping on our plants. So we used twine and barbequeue wooden sticks to create the edging around our plants. We used colourful tags to make them more visible. For each plant species we created labes so we could immediately recognise them: lattuce, fennel, radicchio, broccoli, escarole, leaks, cabbage, fava beans, pumpkins, peas, aromatic herbs, strawberries, rainbow chard. Finally, we cleaned up the paths around our plants. All the weed was put in a compost bin. This is a big container where orgainc waste gradually becomes a natural fertilizer.

In May we could finally harvest our plants. Each studet selected the products required to prepare a vegetarian recepie: strawberries for a very personale interpretation of the traditional "Tiramisu" cake, lattuce for a reinterpretation of the "Pesto Pasta", broccoli for some tasty bruschette. In order to avoid weed from "stealing" precious nutrients from our plants, we regularly cleaned up the are. We organised different tourns with groups of 6-7 students working on the garden each time. Another important task for us was to turn the soil using little hoes. Over time, above alla after storms, the soil tends to become harder making it more difficult for little roots to spread. So, by gently moving the soil around our plants, this problem could be solved. In order to help our vegetables to grow, after a few weeks from planting, we added more organic fertilizers in the areas around our plants. We mixed it to the soft soil and added water to let it dissolve

Students from all grades in our school took botanics classes in our vegetable garden. The studied the different species and prepared dedicated botanical sheets for each of them. Students from 2F class also carried out some science experiments on the soil properties. Take a look at the attached video for more information. We completed this one-year long didactic journey by visiting the Botanic Gardens of Naples where our students could observe and learn about a large variety of plant species.

Normally, we would have planeted seeds in the soil and wait for them to germinate. Unfortunately, we started our winter vegetable garden too late in the year and the seeds didn't have enough time to grow before spring's arrival. So, we went for the alternative option: we plantied little plants previously grown in a seedsbed. First of all we made the soil plane and then we created hills to avoid formation of ponds dangerous for the plants. By using a a trowel we dug little holes, laid the plant roots in and covered up with some soil.
