Introduction

What is Migrants?
Migrants is an 8 minute animation about 2 polar bears who are forced to leave their home due to climate change and become migrants. It has no dialogue so is suitable for work in any language. It is recommended for 8+.

What can I do in class linked to Migrants?
There are free cross-curricular resources in English (pp.9-25) to support work at First Level. Plus there are free resource packs to develop French at 2nd or 3rd Level, with ideas applicable to any language.

What are these resources?
These resources in Gaelic, French & Spanish have been created to tie in with climate change and the issues of COP26 in Glasgow from 31/10-12/11/21. They are based on the cross-curricular activities in the English resource pack & thanks is given to the authors of this great resource.

Raising Awareness, Publicising & Taking Action
Linking Languages & Literacy

Watch this short video in English with your learners.

Encourage them to look out for the following information: key facts about polar bears, threats to polar bears, what you can do to help.

Learners could make notes/draw pictures/share information orally.

Developing Language

Activity: Key facts about polar bears - Cut up the matching up cards & ask learners to match up the Gaelic/French/Spanish & English.

Clues: Ask learners to focus on words they already know or can recognise using their knowledge of English.

Consolidation: Learners could play pairs – as they turn over the cards encourage them to say/translate words & phrases. Learners could also create an extra card with an image for each phrase too.

Sequencing: Show learners the video again & ask them to order their set of cards as they hear them or similar information.

Developing Language

Activity: Threats to polar bears - Share this poster in Gaelic/French/Spanish with your learners. Ask them to find the 3 threats to the polar bears.

Clues: Ask your learners to be language detectives & use the pictures as clues to decode the posters & find the words in Gaelic/French.

Activity: What is climate change & what can you do to help stop it? Discuss with your learners what they can do at home to help the environment & create a class mindmap/list of key words & phrases.

Time to create: Ask learners to make their own presentation using pictures & key words & phrases in English & Gaelic/French/Spanish eg. poster, video, PPT etc.

Time to get digital: Use Word, Googleslides or free & easy to use graphic design websites eg. CANVA or Adobespark.

Vocabulary Bingo Activity – Have a go at this bingo game to revise key words in English/Gaelic/French/Spanish .

Activities: practice reading, listening & matching sounds to words with bingo cards in English & another language.

More fun: Turn your bingo game into Pictionary & use show me boards/paper in pairs, groups or as a class.

Create: Use this website to add your own words or encourage learners to create their own version by hand with pictures or in another language.

Extension: Can your learners make up phrases using the key words? How many words can they remember?

Linking Languages & Expressive Arts

Activity: Draw a picture of a polar bear in a Cubist style with these 2 videos. (NB They are in English with some Spanish) They look at warm & cool colours.

Revision: See if your learners can remember their colours in Gaelic/French/Spanish. Encourage learners to present the colours in their work – orally or by labelling the picture.
