What can I do in class linked to Migrants?
There are free cross-curricular resources in English (pp.9-25) to support work at First Level. Plus there are free resource packs to develop French at 2nd or 3rd Level, with ideas applicable to any language.

What are these resources?
These resources in Gaelic, French & Spanish have been created to tie in with climate change and the issues of COP26 in Glasgow from 31/10-12/11/21. They are based on the cross-curricular activities in the English resource pack & thanks is given to the authors of this great resource.

Raising Awareness, Publicising & Taking Action
Linking Languages & Literacy
Watch this short video in English with your learners.
Encourage them to look out for the following information: key facts about polar bears, threats to polar bears, what you can do to help.
Learners could make notes/draw pictures/share information orally.
Developing Language
Activity: Key facts about polar bears - Cut up the matching up cards & ask learners to match up the Gaelic/French/Spanish & English.
Clues: Ask learners to focus on words they already know or can recognise using their knowledge of English.
Answers: 1.c 2e. 3a. 4d. 5f. 6b.
Consolidation: Learners could play pairs – as they turn over the cards encourage them to say/translate words & phrases. Learners could also create an extra card with an image for each phrase too.
Sequencing: Show learners the video again & ask them to order their set of cards as they hear them or similar information.
Developing Language
Activity: Threats to polar bears - Share this poster in Gaelic/French/Spanish with your learners. Ask them to find the 3 threats to the polar bears.
Clues: Ask your learners to be language detectives & use the pictures as clues to decode the posters & find the words in Gaelic/French.
Reference materials: see the vocabulary list linked to the video in the classroom resources document. A dictionary/online dictionary could also provide support – Gaelic/French/Spanish.

Developing Language
Activity: What is climate change & what can you do to help stop it? Discuss with your learners what they can do at home to help the environment & create a class mindmap/list of key words & phrases.
