Archeological Museum

The Varna Archaeological Museum is one of the oldest in Bulgaria, with great traditions in science and museum work. It was created as an archaeological collection in 1887 and in 1906 its first exposition was presented to the public. Its structure also includes two open-air museums: Roman Thermae (II-III c.) With a separate an exhibition of early Christian mosaics (5th c.) and icons from the 19th c. On an area of 2000 square meters, with the tens of thousands of exhibits are presented the sections: Prehistory (40,000 - 1200 BC), Antiquity (VIII c. BC - VI c. AD), The Middle Ages (VII-XVIII centuries) and Numismatics - with a rich collection of various coins from the 6th century BC. to the eighteenth century.   
All the exhibits on display were discovered during excavations in Varna (ancient Odessos) and the region. Among them, of course, the oldest gold in the world is more than 3,000 objects found in a necropolis near Varna - over 6 kg of gold. objects of middle and late chalcolithic (4600-4200 BC). Also attracting attention are the largest collections in Bulgaria of antique terracotta statuettes (5th c. BC), glass vessels (4 c. BC - 6 c. BC) and lamps (5 c. BC). - 7th c. AD, as well as medieval gold and silver jewelry (12th-14th c.). An extremely valuable collection of antique gold ornaments and objects (5th century BC - 6th century AD), some of which are unique.
    Traditionally, one of the museum's wings features a collection of Bulgarian icons from the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries, the second largest in the country. One of the attractions for young visitors and students is the renovated 2013 Museum of Education, with restorations of prehistoric and medieval dwellings and technology that they can study on site.
