This year in TY we had two weeks dedicated to work experience.
They happened during November (11th-15th) and March (9th-12th)
Quotes from students about their work experience

While working there, I was inspired by how hard all the other members of staff worked and this made me want to work as hard as they did. - Bar work
It is vital to be quick on your feet while working in a hospital. Working here showed me that there are good and bad times. While I was in Temple street I worked in the ICU unit, various wards, radiology and I even got to go to the Royal College of Surgeons to see how students react under pressure. - Hospital work
I developed my ability to talk to new people as I spoke to many people in the work place and also people my age who were taking the course as well. I was able to speak with new people professionally and confidently
My job as a runner mainly consisted of doing the little things that the floor manager and the crew didn’t have the time to do but had to be done. A lot of the time there was no one there to tell me what to do so I would have to figure it out and solve problems by my own accord and I gained independence through this. - Work at RTE Studios

During this time I made coffee/tea for the stars, brought people water on set, brought the stars to hair and makeup and I made trips to dressing rooms or the canteen when something was needed. I really enjoyed this work experience as I really got an insight into what it's like to work in media production, which may end up being a potential career choice for me in the future. - Work on the RTE show Dancing With The Stars
From my work experience at the Peter Mc Verry Trust, I gained a lot of new skills and was given an insight into the life of those less fortunate than others.I got the opportunity to speak to members of the service about their stories, how they ended up homeless and how they found the Peter Mc Verry Trust. We visited various drop in centres, houses, services and hostels all run by the Peter Mc Verry Trust. We also visited The Four Courts and got talks on the addiction and the abuse of substances. This really made me realise how lucky I am and how much I take granted on a daily basis.
The second day of work experience I was able to sit with the staff during a board meeting. Through this time, I learned how to efficiently take down notes and I was given an insight of what happens at these type of meetings.

The second skill i obtained was surprisingly how to get around Dublin. i took the bus to work experience and i had to make sure i had the proper bus [...] Thankfully i never got lost but I think I learned a lot [...] how to read timetables and how to look for the right bus. - Pharmacy work
On my first week of work experience- I feel I was very shy to begin with but i slowly came out of my shell and by my second work experience I felt I was a lot more confident in general with other staff and customers.
Quotes from students about their work experience
The first skill I learned: how to create my own CV and to take responsibility by searching for my Work Experience. It was quite hard at the start, getting “rejected” if you like, but I expected that. I knew the odds of getting a work experience “handed” to you just like that were going to be slim!!
I learned to have dedication as it is very hard to do the work that they do in the hospital especially with the hours they are expected to work. They have to get up at really early times in the morning and work really long tiring days to help people. This taught me I have to be dedicated and it is important to enjoy what you do.
I also learned some editing and filming tips and tricks to make your films look better. It was a great insight to see the behind the scenes of how films are made. To see the amount of time and effort that goes into even a short film was a great insight
Quotes from students about their work experience
I also am very glad that I was thought basic office work such as how filing systems work, this is always useful information to know for organisation skills for the future. I have learnt how to dress appropriately for the work space this will be useful for the future when doing job interviews and so on.
I was able to experience doing physical and technical work, and I learned that I would like a similar career where different things happen every day and you have to learn new things and physically do work instead of just on a computer. It inspired me to maybe look for a career in tech or electronics, because I really enjoyed learning about the equipment, using it and I was quick at picking up how to do it.
