After reading the problem, I drew a picture of a pizza with 8 slices. In the problem, it said that there were 5/8 so I know the pizza needed 8 total slices. Then I drew dots on 5 slices of pizza.  The dots were the pepperonis. I counted how many pieces didn't have pepperonis.  3 didn't have pepperonis.  So I knew 3/8 was my answer. 3 is the numerator which is on the top and it is what is being used.  The 8 is the denominator which is on the bottom and it is the whole amount.

If I think about a ruler,  1 foot is the same as 12 inches.  That would be too small. 3 centimeters would be way too small.  That makes me think about the length of my fingernail. 3 meters would be too big because one meter is like putting three rulers together and it is longer than 36 inches so 3 meters would be about 9 rulers.  1 yard is perfect because that is about the size of 3 rulers which could be the height of a scooter depending on what kind you get.

After I read the problem, I knew I had to subtract because it asked how much change she would get back.  Then I wrote down $5.00 then $3.40 underneath it.  I made sure I lined everything up.  Then did the math.

To find the missing shapes in the pattern, we gave all the same shapes the same letters.  I found the missing letters then and drew the shapes that matched the letters.

A bar graph is a graph that shows data using bars. To solve this problem, read the question. Then add the number of miles Tricia biked on each day. I noticed that some bars are not touching the lines.  They are between the lines.  That means the number comes in the middle.  Like on Tuesday, the bar is in the middle of 6 and 8. The number in the middle is 7. After adding the data for each day, the sum is 22.

Area is a measurement of the length times the width.  To solve this problem,  I would count all the squares.  The area of this fence is

Mom baked a cake.  The recipe called for 2/4 cup of flour and 1/4 cup of sugar. How much flour and sugar combined did the recipe call for?

After reading this problem, I remembered that the word combine means add.  I also know with fractions the bottom number which is the denominator stays the same.  So I added 2+1 to get 3 and kept the 4.  The recipe needs a total of 3/4 sugar and flour.

I would look at both numbers and look for the higher number. For the first problem, I would pick the equal  sign because they are the same number.  Equal means same. For number two, I will use place value by looking at the number in the thousands place.  They are the same, so I will keep going. I will look at the hundreds place.  The number with the 2 in the hundreds place is bigger than the number with the 1 in the hundreds place, so 2,288 is greater than 2, 199.

I would count the dollars first, then I would count all the dimes because it is easy to count by tens, then I would write the number down, then I would count all the quarters and add that to the amount from the dollars and dimes, I would count the nickels and pennies., and I would add it all together.  Don't forget with money you line up all the numbers and decimals properly.  I added $2.50 + .75 + .35 = $3.60

I would use estimation when I don't need the exact answer.  For the first problem, I would change 5,652 to 5,650.  I looked at the number in the ones place.  Since it's less than 5, I made it a 0.  Then I changed 376 to 380.  I looked at the number in the ones place, since it was greater than 5, I rounded 76 up. For problem 2, I would change 7,401 to 7,400 and keep 670 the same.  This makes it easier to subtract when estimating.
