I would look at both numbers and look for the higher number. For the first problem, I would pick the equal sign because they are the same number. Equal means same. For number two, I will use place value by looking at the number in the thousands place. They are the same, so I will keep going. I will look at the hundreds place. The number with the 2 in the hundreds place is bigger than the number with the 1 in the hundreds place, so 2,288 is greater than 2, 199.Loading...

I would use estimation when I don't need the exact answer. For the first problem, I would change 5,652 to 5,650. I looked at the number in the ones place. Since it's less than 5, I made it a 0. Then I changed 376 to 380. I looked at the number in the ones place, since it was greater than 5, I rounded 76 up. For problem 2, I would change 7,401 to 7,400 and keep 670 the same. This makes it easier to subtract when estimating.
